Poverty – what causes it?

Poverty is a human rights issue. All over the world people are suffering from lack of means necessary to meet basic needs. Based on statistics,  more than 3 billion live on less than $2.50 a day and more than 1.3 billion people live in extreme poverty, earning less than $1.25 / day.

According to UNICEF, 22,000 children die each day due to poverty. But what really is the cause?

In the UK, according to JRF foundation that the youngest and oldest had the highest poverty rate 10 years ago. In their 2015 – 2016 survey, the poverty rate amongst the oldest adult remains the same but for the youngest it has increased.

The Government on the other hand was criticized for their redefinition of poverty. Under Cameron’s administration, poverty is no longer classified as family income but whether the family is in work or not. It was viewed by poverty campaigners as unrealistic view of poverty.
